Occupational Health

Your Business Depends on Healthy Employees

No matter what services you provide, what product you manufacture or what items you sell, the health of your business is closely linked to the health of your employees. The federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) estimates that more than five million workers are injured on the job every year, costing U.S. businesses approximately $60 billion annually.

Keeping your business productive means keeping your employees productive, and keeping your employees productive is the business of the Henry Ford Occupational Health Program.

Occupational Health works with employers of all sizes, in a wide range of industries, to develop and provide customized packages of services that meet each employer's specific needs. By drawing on Henry Ford Health System's dedication to high-quality care and its experience in cost-effective managed care, the department is able to provide employers with care that keeps people working. Department services include:

  • Disability management of workers compensation and sickness and accident claims.
  • Pre-placement/new hire examinations.
  • Industrial rehabilitation, both on-and off-site.
  • Compliance consulting on OSHA, ADA and other federal mandates.
  • Illness and accident prevention.
  • Ergonomic evaluation and design.
  • Health education and screening.

The goals are to:

  • To reduce workplace injuries.
  • To enable injured employees to continue to work.
  • To minimize lost work time of injured employees.

Comprehensive System, Personalized Service

Occupational Health couples the convenience and quality of a comprehensive health system with individualized service. Each employer works with a small, well-managed network of providers who are experienced in return-to-work protocols.

Employees benefit from high-quality care that returns them to work quickly, and employers benefit from a more productive work force. Because the department uses an individualized case management strategy, employees can usually return to work with or without restrictions.

Employers also enjoy an easy-to-administer program. The Department of Occupational Health tailors not only services but also administrative procedures to meet the specific needs of each employer.

Employers contract for customized packages of specific services at an agreed upon price. There's no guessing, no surprises when it comes to quality, price or services.

Services That Reduce Time Off Work
  • Disability management - coordination of services to provide seamless care from injury through return to work, including on-site physician services and off-site emergency, surgical and psychiatric care.
  • Industrial rehabilitation on- and off-site - comprehensive services include occupational therapy, physical therapy, functional capacity evaluation, job coaching, work conditioning, and on-site job analysis.
  • Transitional work programs -- individualized short-term programs that expedite early return to work. These programs facilitate limited duty or limited physical exertion levels for employees who are temporarily prevented from performing their full duties because of injuries or illnesses.

Strategies That Reduce Injury and Illness
  • Compliance consulting - recommendations for meeting OSHA guidelines, the requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act, Department of Transportation programs and requirements of other regulatory agencies.
  • Ergonomics evaluation and design - analysis of the interaction between employees and their workplace, equipment, facilities, work methods and tools and the design of cost-effective solutions to ergonomic hazards.
  • Pre-placement/new hire physicals - examinations that assist employers in the job placement process.
  • Executive physicals - examinations for company executives to ensure that health problems are diagnosed and treated in their early, less complicated stages.
  • Education and training programs - educational materials help employees protect their own health and safety. Special classes in safe work techniques such as proper lifting and body mechanics are also available.
