What is a podcast?

A podcast is a multimedia file that can be downloaded and enjoyed on a computer or iPOD.  It is a popular misconception that podcasts can be listened to only on iPODs.  This isn't the case as podcasts can be heard or viewed on your computer.  Audio podcasts can be downloaded to any MP3 player, and video podcasts can be downloaded to any player that supports the MP4 file format.

Podcasts are typically episodic in nature and are produced on a variety of topics.  Podcasts can be either audio or video files.

What differentiates a podcast from just being a media file is that you subscribe to podcasts via a RSS feed.

How can I subscribe?

When you subscribe to a magazine, you get new issues in your mailbox as they are published.  The same is true with podcasts, but instead of arriving in your mailbox,. the new episodes will arrive in your podcatcher.  A podcatcher is software that goes out and finds new episodes of the podcasts you subscribe to and downloads them to your computer.  The most widely known podcatcher is iTunes.

You can also use web based aggregators such as Google Reader to subscribe to podcasts.

Subscribing to Henry Ford's podcasts is easy and the links below will allow you to subscribe using many of the most popular aggregators, or even to receive new episodes in your email inbox.
