Henry Ford Health System provides neuropsychological evaluation services for patients experiencing neurocognitive (related to memory, thinking and attention) and emotional difficulties that may result from a wide array of conditions affecting the brain. These conditions include:
Epilepsy and seizure disorders
Psychiatric disorders
Traumatic brain injuries
Degenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's, Parkinson's and Multiple Sclerosis
Memory, concentration and/or behavioral problems that impair functioning
Neurodevelopmental and neurobehavioral disorders such as learning disabilities, attention disorders, autism and Asperger's Disorder, Tourette's Syndrome, and other genetic and neurological disorders
Assessments focus on a patient's ability to function at work, school or in normal routine activities required to live independently. The neuropsychology team is trained to evaluate patients of any age.
How can I schedule a visit? Neuropsychological evaluations can be scheduled by calling our main office at (313) 876-2526. We see patients at several locations throughout the Detroit-metro area, including downtown Detroit, Clinton Township, Dearborn and West Bloomfield.
What should you expect in your visit with Neuropsychology?
A typical visit in Neuropsychology takes about 5-6 hours, but may be shorter or longer depending on the nature and complexity of the patient's condition. The visit will include a clinical interview with a fully licensed Neuropsychologist and several hours spent conducting a standard battery of tests. These pencil-and-paper and computerized tests are administered in a one-on-one setting in a quiet room and may evaluate a patient's:
Intellectual functioning
Memory and learning
Motor and sensory skills
Visual perception
Receptive and expressive language abilities
Ability to organize and plan
Attention and concentration
Emotional and behavioral functioning
Following an evaluation, our team will prepare a comprehensive report of the tests performed and a summary of the findings of the diagnostic assessment. This information will be shared with the referring clinician and can aid in the development of a treatment plan. In some cases, feedback may be shared directly with patients through a separate visit or over the telephone.
How can it help? Neuropsychological evaluation assesses a patient's cognitive, emotional and behavioral functioning to develop recommendations for medical treatment and environmental interventions.
Neuropsychological evaluation can be helpful in determining:
Decision making for medical treatment
A patient's capacity for independent living
Individual Education Plan (IEP) or a Behavior Intervention Plan (BIP) development
Educational accommodations
Needs for community services
Diagnosis
A patient's skills can be documented prior to and after a planned medical intervention (a change in current medications, surgical treatment or treatment for cancer). Progress can be monitored over time from the onset of a developmental disability, injury, illness or treatment. After the evaluation, families may be provided with a description of the patient's strengths and weaknesses to facilitate understanding of appropriate expectations. There will also be suggestions for improving the patient's functioning and help in knowing what the patient's needs may be in the future.
Will the evaluation be covered by my insurance plan?
Henry Ford accepts most major health insurance plans. However, individual coverage for neuropsychological testing varies from plan to plan. Our scheduling coordinators verify patient insurance benefits prior to the appointment and communicate any expected out-of-pocket expenses. If you have questions regarding insurance coverage, please contact our office at (313) 876-2526.
