Respiratory Therapist Responsibilities & Career Information

Respiratory Therapist

For respiratory therapists, their job is to care for those with breathing or cardiopulmonary disorders. The patient's respiratory care and the supervision of respiratory therapy technicians are their primary responsibility. Respiratory therapists work under the direction of physicians or other senior medical staff members, and follow strict care procedures for patients with respiratory illnesses or maladies. From consulting with physicians and other primary care providers, to helping to create and adjust patient care plans. Respiratory therapists also provide complex therapy that relies on them to make informed and educated decisions independently, such as with patients on life support in an intensive care situation.

Respiratory therapists care for and treat patients of all types and with all types of respiratory afflictions. Ranging from infants, prematurely born with underdeveloped lungs, to the elderly suffering from lung infections or diseases, it is their job to clear restricted passageways and ease respiratory pain in times of illness or injury. It is also the respiratory therapist's job to treat patients with asthma, emphysema and other breathing-related conditions.
